BIOL 22100 - Introduction to Microbiology - Session Offered: Spring Summer Fall Microbiology is a rapidly expanding field of study, currently drawing information from and contributing information to nearly all the sciences from cellular chemistry to global climate change. Topics include prokaryotic and eukaryotic gene structure and regulation, chromatin structure, DNA replication, translation, mechanisms of transcription, and an introduction to viruses. We take a modern interdisciplinary approach to understand the interactions at many levels from cells to organisms to populations to communities to landscapes.

If you are interested in a health care career, visit doctors or veterinarians and ask for a moment to speak with them about their careers and education. This course introduces the study of human impact on the environment and fundamental principles of ecology. Yet another area that drew heavily on microscopy was knowledge of heredity (later designated as the science of genetics), especially in the late nineteenth century after structures such as chromosomes were first observed and cellular reproduction was understood in terms of meiosis and mitosis.

For example, ecologists might study the changes in population size of a group of birds in response to the presence of a predator, or the impact of pollution on frog populations. I am interested in learning more about case studies and how to use them in my class. This program is the only way to earn Distinction through the Division of Biological Sciences. Use and care of the microscope and other laboratory instruments. The cases are very engaging, and the students walk away with a wealth of knowledge that they have researched and processed themselves! After a while, the biologist really got into the act. Three hours of lecture and two hours of laboratory weekly. The importance of these mechanisms to environmental cycling of key elements is included. Whole-biosphere issues, such as global warming and global patterns of productivity, will form the umbrella issues for more focused integrations of ecological knowledge centered at the population level to understand the viability of small and threatened populations.

Microbiologists are called upon to address issues in medicine, food science, agriculture and biotechnology. French microbiologist and chemist Louis Pasteur (1822–1895) showed that living things do not arise spontaneously. This directed research project will be presented in two drafts of a complex research paper. I use a suite of experimental approaches that integrate field observations with controlled environmental systems to address questions that intersect plant physiological ecology and soil microbial ecology.
