Involvement of European powers—France and Great Britain in particular—in colonial expansion from the eighteenth century onward, their encroachment on Ottoman lands throughout the nineteenth century until the demise of the empire, and their continuing grip up to decolonization after World War II have meant that knowledge of the languages and cultures of subject populations remained central to the arsenal of imperial governance. 1 If the missionary was one of the key figures of the Spanish conquest of the Americas, the trained administrator was certainly an important player in the Middle East and North Africa.

And, indeed, as Nada Moumtaz suggests in Chapter 7, further refinements and elaborations of the core concepts of tradition and orthodoxy are both possible and desirable. However, dismissing alternative readings or observations on the grounds that they rely on a model that allegedly opposes theory and observation, or treats them as different moments of the research process, implies that any set of observations not already informed by the concept of tradition must remain open to charges of empiricism.
