But of scale” (1985: 53). The optimal scale at which ecological consciousness and healthy human communities can be developed, Sale argues, is the bioregional. The earth is organized, he asserts, not into artificial states but into natural areas, or bioregions, that are defined by “particular attributes of flora, fauna, water, climate, soils, and landforms, and by the human settlements and cultures those attributes have given rise to” (Sale 1985: 55). Sale quickly adds that the borders of bioregions are inevitably indistinct and interpenetrating.

There is no bookish flavor about the stories” (Pattee 1915: 230). Of Sarah Orne Jewett, he writes, “she is a writer of little books and short stories, the painter of a few subjects in a provincial little area” (p. 234). Alice Brown, who “if she were to paint the picture at all she must paint it as it was in her heart. To add to it or to subtract from it were to violate truth itself ” (p. 241) is an example of someone who balances women’s need to express themselves emotionally with regionalism’s project of faithful, nearly photographic representation.

Telling these interrelated stories is like creating a regional text of our own, for we shall be using a small slice of literary history to illuminate the cultural importance not just of regional literature, but of literature more broadly. Literature was only one among a multitude of ways in which people engaged with culture, but in both its consumption and its production it is one of the most important and complex means by which people struggled over basic issues of representation. That small area of the cultural field in the nineteenth century that was occupied by literature is an especially interesting and useful site through which to examine how conflicts over the meaning and the place of new kinds of people were staged, circulated, and consumed.
