The basic operation of packet-based MPLS in support of unicast routing with a single level label stack is illustrated in Figure 3-4. LSR1 performs the edge LSR function. It applies the initial label to the packet after performing a conventional longest-match lookup on the IP header and determining a FEC for the packet. MPLS routers can assign packets arriving on different ports to different FECs. This forms the basis for building MPLS Virtual Private Networks. Conventional forwarding, on the other hand, can consider only information that travels with the packet in the Layer 3 header.
