The teams are divided into “conferences” (or communities) containing 8 to 12 teams each. Games are more frequent between members of the same conference than members of diﬀerent conferences. Inter-conference games, however, are not uniformly distributed, with teams that are geographically closer likely to play more games with one another than teams separated by geographic distances. However, some conferences have teams playing nearly as many games against teams in other conferences as teams within their own conference.
