Students note that they seem more characteristic of Mahler's practicing subphase of the toddler years. Other students note how the negativity involved in such mother-child interaction feels more "anal" than the first year of life Winnicott focuses on. I add to this the games of "peeka-boo" and "hide-and-seek," two games intrinsic to every culture. I argue that peek-a-boo occurs at exactly the time in development (the second six months of life) where the dilemma Winnicott describes arises. Hide-and-seek, however, is a much later game, starting at about three years of age and lasting through latency with minor variations.
It is in the minute but real lags in time between need and satisfaction that the baby begins to distinguish 28 CHAPTER Two between what is an internal sensation, a fantasy in Winnicott's terminology, and what is external reality. And what is the payoff for the baby? Winnicott says it beautifully: The point is that in fantasy things work by magic; there are no brakes on fantasy, and love and hate cause alarming effects. External reality has brakes on it, and can be studied and known, and, in fact, fantasy is only tolerable at full blast when objective reality is appreciated well.
Only if mother can rise to the baby's needs to turn her into a verb can the baby's development thrive. Here Winnicott adds to the equation something he only alluded to in his "Primitive Emotional Development" paper, that which he calls the Primary Maternal Preoccupation. He rejects the notion of "id-satisfactions" as the primary catalytic agent driving development, with mother's role simply being to reduce frustration in the baby. What he called the mother's wish to be attacked in his 1945 paper he now sees as her most basic focus on the child and that notes this preoccupation is willing and deliberate.
